Local economic accelerator Mana Up is bringing Hawaii-made goods to Los Angeles at a pop-up market held later this month in Venice Beach.
Running from Sept. 20-22 at 1511 Abbot Kinney Blvd., the Aloha Market will feature products from more than 50 Hawaii artisans, entrepreneurs and brands.
“We are thrilled to showcase the innovative and world-class products coming out of Hawaii at this exclusive event in Los Angeles,” said Meli James, co-founder of Mana Up, in a statement. “Aloha Market is a unique opportunity to introduce exceptional Hawaii-made items and incredible entrepreneurs to Southern California. We are excited to bring a taste of Hawaii’s creative spirit to the heart of Los Angeles, so the community can truly experience our Islands.”
Mana Up has hosted similar markets in Japan and New York.
James founded Mana Up alongside Brittany Heyd in 2017. The initiative aims to help Hawaii consumer brands scale globally, with the larger goal of diversifying the local economy and increasing job opportunities. Its accelerator launched in 2018 and to date has had 85 companies graduate from the program, with another 10 participating in its current cohort.
According to the event website, companies participating in the Aloha Market include Mana Up accelerator graduates such as baby clothing company Coco Moon, Hawaiian Soda Co., footwear company Kakaako Kasuals, home décor brand Noho Home, artist Kris Goto, Honua Skincare, Maui Chili Chili Oil, gluten-free and dairy-free dessert brand Farm to Fudge, pet food company Pawniolo Pets and more. Other participating companies are Honolulu Cookie Co., Hawaiian Host and Kahala, among others.
Aloha Market also will feature a range of activities, including lei making workshops, panel discussions, interactive presentations and more.
“Los Angeles is Hawaii’s top domestic market, and engaging events, like Aloha Market, are crucial to driving travel demand to an audience with a deep appreciation and love for Hawaii,” said Jay Talwar, senior vice president of marketing and chief marketing officer of the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau, which is partnering with Mana Up to host the event, in a statement. “It’s an opportunity to remind our friends in Southern California of the unique experiences and products that make Hawaii special and also ensure tourism benefits all of Hawaii’s people.”
